Why Is Beef Biltong So Healthy?

Beef Biltong (similar to Beef Jerky) is a type of dried, cured meat originating from Southern Africa, particularly popular in countries like South Africa and Namibia. It is made from beef, although other meats such as game meats may also be used. Biltong is a healthy snack for several reasons:

  1. High Protein Content: Biltong is a rich source of high-quality protein. Protein is essential for various bodily functions, including muscle growth and repair, enzyme production, and the maintenance of healthy hair, skin, and nails.

  2. Low in Fat: Biltong is typically made from lean cuts of meat, resulting in a lower fat content compared to other processed meat snacks like jerky. Reducing saturated and trans fats in the diet can contribute to better heart health and help manage weight.

  3. Nutrient Density: Biltong contains a variety of essential nutrients, including iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and other B-vitamins. These nutrients play crucial roles in energy production, immune function, and the formation of red blood cells.

  4. Minimal Additives: Traditional biltong recipes often involve minimal ingredients, mainly consisting of meat, salt, and a blend of spices. As a result, it tends to have fewer additives like preservatives, artificial flavors, or high levels of sodium, compared to many other processed snacks.

  5. Natural Drying Process: Biltong is traditionally air-dried, which helps retain more nutrients compared to other cooking methods that may involve higher heat or smoking. The drying process also removes moisture, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi.

  6. Low Carbohydrate Content: Biltong is generally low in carbohydrates, making it suitable for individuals following low-carb or ketogenic diets. It can be a good alternative to carb-heavy snacks like chips or crackers.

However, it's important to note that the nutritional composition of biltong can vary depending on the specific recipe and preparation methods used. Other commercially available biltong products may also have added ingredients or higher sodium levels, so it's advisable to check the label for nutritional information. We at Bunny Chow only use organic meats, with all natural seasonings and spices to ensure we have NO chemicals or preservatives. We also ensure the absolute traditional methods of air drying and packing the Biltong.

We have two types,Sliced and Strip. Sliced (or chunk) is a more traditional way South Africans eat biltong and it is thicker slice (chunk) that has a dry outside and a moist (rare) center. The strip is a much thinner slice which is dried all the way through and easy to tear strips off and eat. We also make it in two flavors. The original or traditional flavour or the Peri Peri Spicy flavour. As with any food, moderation is key, and it's essential to consider biltong as part of a balanced diet that includes a variety of nutritious foods.
